ExperienceAt York College of Pennsylvania I took a teaching and tutoring writing class by Dr. Dominic Dellicarpini, an executive committee member of the National Council of Writing, and from that I began to understand the complexities of writing and how intimidating it can be, and how to help people become comfortable with writing. I was able to tutor several students throughout this course formally and I have informally tutored students in various other classes afterwards.
I want to be a tutor because I feel that many young people don't know how to accurately articulate their thoughts and feelings because they either don't know how or they don't understand the importance of proper communication, and I feel like I can relate to students and help them find inspiration to want to read and write more effectively.
I find I bring a no-nonsense, non-pretentious passion of reading and writing into my tutoring sessions which helps coax out the timidity of students in order to confront and subdue fears we all have of sharing our writings, and to provide positive feedback and encouragement for all forms of active learning within those sessions.
I was in the military for five years, so out of force of habit I do offer a great deal of structure to learning once I figure out how best to address the key issues of the student.
HobbiesI read as many books, poems, lyrics, stories as I can manage, I write poetry and dabble in online reviews of books I've read that I found to be more than enjoyable.
I do exercise quite regularly. I enjoy classical music and plays.
However I'm not into sports or modern culture that much, which may limit my abilities to relate to today's youths.
